small batch roasting

Laurie, our resident roaster at Union Place Coffee Roasters learned the art of coffee bean selection, small batch roasting, blending coffee and cupping while at the Maidstone Coffee Plant facility in Rochester, NY. An entrepreneur at heart, Laurie built out the small batch roasting operation at the Genesee Valley Regional Market in the Spring of 2013. Laurie and Joe refurbished a worn-out warehouse at the Genesee Valley Regional Market into a hip coffee roasting operation and cafe bar, serving locally roasted coffee with quality and care. On any given day, you will find Laurie roasting green coffee in small batches in her Diedrich roaster.

Unlike other roasters, Laurie roasts coffee in small batches, primarily because it gives her the best quality controls for consistency and freshness, and it gives her customers a great coffee drinking experience. As local, small batch roasters, we do not rely on computer processes with preset parameters, rather choosing to roast hands-on using our senses; watching for color changes, listening for first and/or second cracks, key aromas, and then cupping for rich aroma and desired taste profiles. Keeping detailed notes for each roast allows us to consistently duplicate desired batches. And, small batch roasting means our coffee sells through quickly, providing you with a fresher bean.

Because we are small batch roasters, we trust our senses to capture the ideal roast and deliver perfectly roasted coffee to you, our valued friends. We consider roasting coffee an art, striving for perfection in every small batch we roast.

SOURCING COFFEE

Working with responsible importers is very important to us. Therefore, we only purchase our coffee beans from coffee importers whose social and ethical standards align with our own values of fairness and equality. We are proud to purchase high quality green coffee beans from importers that work directly with the farmers in Central and South American regions and beyond. These respected coffee partners educate and teach sustainable farming techniques to help farmers lower production costs, conserve and protect natural resources, and improve yields. As a result, farmers are enabled to sell their higher quality coffee beans at fair market prices.
